Torrevieja Insider

Located on Spain’s glorious southern Costa Blanca and boasting two vast salt lakes, the city of Torrevieja has been recognised as having one of the healthiest climates in the world. With over 300 days of sunshine per year, average August temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius and mild winters, Torrevieja is a superb holiday destination and home to a large expat community.

Torrevieja Airports

Easily accessed by both Murcia-San Javier Airport and the international Alicante Airport, the city also enjoys good road access from the main AP-7 motorway that stretches all the way from Marbella to Barcelona and beyond, bringing with it a fair share of Spanish holidaymakers. Another popular route into the city is the N-332 dual carriageway with links to both airports, allowing travellers to avoid the toll fees on the motorway and providing scenic driving along much of its coastal route.

A good choice of car hire is available at both airports and there are a number independent car hire companies in the city including the well established and professional Coys Rent-A-Car. Torrevieja boasts a regular and efficient local bus service that has routes to most of the city’s residential areas and neighbouring towns. For longer journeys there are coaches that leave from the main bus terminus and travel to a number of major towns and cities along the Costa Blanca such as Cartagena, Alicante and Benidorm.

With the beach as a reference point and the city laid out in a grid system, walking is simple and often the best way to explore any new town or city where you will find hidden gems often missed when in a car or on a bus. Alternately there is a small selection of bike and scooter hire companies in the city, some also offering electric bikes.

Torrevieja Beaches

Torrevieja offers visitors an excellent choice of attractions and activities but one of its focal points is the lovely selection of beaches. There are over a dozen areas where visitors can enjoy swimming and sun bathing, some just small bays but others with long golden sands, excellent facilities, lifeguards and beach sports.

Playa del Cura – With its location in the heart of the city, Playa del Cura is Torrevieja’s most popular beach and is backed by a lively and picturesque promenade lined with boutiques, shops, cafes, ice cream parlours, bars and restaurants. Aside from its favourable location and wide stretch of sand for sun bathing, Playa del Cura is also popular with surfers and boasts one of the best snorkelling routes in the area. It is cleaned nightly and has been awarded the Blue Flag status and also the Qualitur Award for its facilities and cleanliness.

Playa El Acequion – Located next to Torrevieja’s Port this is a long and wide beach within walking distance from the city centre with a selection of bars and restaurants nearby. Its facilities include disability access, lifeguards, beach sports, ablutions and ample sun loungers. Within the marina area next to the port thrill seekers can try their hand at a number of adrenaline inducing water sports and activities.

Playa de los Locos – Beach of the crazy and funnily enough my local beach 🙂 A wonderful long stretch of sand, given its name due to a lunatic asylum located here in days of old, Playa de los Locos has a mix of gently sloping sand and shallow waters ideal for younger children. The road running along the beachfront is lined with bars and restaurants and at the far end there are a series of cliffs and coves where the best snorkelling routes in the city are located.

Attractions & Activities in Torrevieja

The Salt Lakes – These play a large part in Torrevieja’s origins as a fishing and salt mining village, and form part of the Parc Natural de La Mata-Torrevieja. Here keen walkers and nature enthusiasts will find a number of hiking and cycling trails around the edges of the lakes with a lovely variety of flora & fauna and resident pink flamingos. With the high salt content the lakes have a similar buoyancy to the Dead Sea and are great fun to float about in or read a book without getting it wet.

Theme & Adventure ParksAquopolis is the largest water park in the city and boasts some thrilling rides, chill out pools, children’s play areas, shady gardens and various cafes and snack bars. Aquapark Flamingo is a smaller one and best suited for younger children with gentle but fun rides and a variety of other activities. For the ultimate fun day out, Lo Rufete Multi Adventure Park is situated just outside Torrevieja and offers thrills galore with paintball, quad bikes, kayaking and horse riding just to name a few. Visitors can bring along meats and salads and enjoy a BBQ and swim in the pool for free when taking part in the park’s activities.

Sports & LeisureTorrevieja Sports City needs to be seen to be believed and is a city landmark. The place is huge and boasts a mind boggling choice of international standard sporting facilities, football stadium and an Olympic size indoor swimming pool. The modern architecture of the complex is fantastic and it plays host to a number of sporting events. Ozone Leisure Centre is a big hit with all ages and offers 10 pin bowling, cinemas, virtual arcade, mini golf, and trampolines and soft play areas for the younger children.

Torrevieja Nightlife

An important factor on most holidaymakers wish list is nightlife, and Torrevieja certainly doesn’t disappoint. When the sun sets over the glistening Mediterranean this city really comes alive and boasts a superb range of evening activities for young and old. The sports and leisure complexes mentioned above both stay open until late at night, as does Habaneras Commercial Centre where you will find a superb selection of shops, boutiques, cafes and restaurants.

Dining – The picturesque Paseo Juan Aparicio that runs along the city’s beachfront is the main area for wining & dining and offers delightful local and international restaurants with the emphasis being on wonderful fresh seafood. Being the most popular tourist area prices can be on the high side, but if you venture a couple of blocks up from the beach the bars and restaurants are more Spanish orientated, serve mouthwatering local dishes and can be a fraction of the price you will pay on the beach. Throughout the city there are an abundance of traditional tapas bars where most still serve a free tapa with your drinks order.

Bars & Clubs – Visitors to Torrevieja who fancy kicking up their heels and dancing till dawn have a fantastic choice of bars and clubs in the city. With relaxed licencing laws many of the bars stay open until the early hours of the morning and offer an assortment of in-house and live entertainment. The choice of bars include British, Irish, Spanish tapas bars, music bars, gaming bars and beach bars. The Spanish have strong family values and love children so visitors will find, other than music and gaming (gambling) bars, the majority welcome kids and some provide play areas and bouncy castles.

Most of the nightclubs are located in Poligono Industrial Estate on the edge of the city which makes sense as the clubs pump out the tunes until 7am and being in an industrial estate there are no residents to disturb and club owners save on expensive soundproofing. The most famous and long running club is OZ Discoteca (formerly Pasha) that now features an over 21’s bar area, perfect for the older swingers in town! Other popular clubs include Love, Ultra, Genius and Madisson.

Located right in the middle of the picturesque marina is Torrevieja’s most exclusive venue Niki Lounge. The only word to explain this place is awesome, with a swimming pool complete with island podiums and dancing girls, chill out Arabian tent beds, beautiful decor, delicious cuisine, the latest lighting and music systems and regular theme nights.

All said, we have only scratched the surface when writing about this great city and its attractions and anyone visiting will find a whole host of other excellent things to do, museums, historical buildings, parks and plazas, street markets, fun fairs, flamenco and equestrian shows, boat trips and many lovely attractions further afield that can be visited on a day out.

Information About Spain

This website also provides information about Spain in general. This includes important public bank holidays or red days as we refer to them here. Our info section also contains important information about driving here and health. Another confusing issue we tackle is clothing and footwear sizes which are different. You can find out more by checking our UK sizes in Spain page for a helpful comparison between the two countries.
